The coconut is the fruit of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), a representative of the palm family or Arecaceae. Full flower makes up to 30 centimeters in diameter. The outside of the fruit is smooth and light green or orange when the flower is not ripe, brownish and covered with a thick layer of brown wood fibers surrounding the mature nuts and composed of a solid hull spherical protecting an edible white almond.
The coconut palm is probably native to the region indomalaise. It is now naturalized in most tropical countries.
