In Martinique, nature isn’t just beautiful—it’s bursting with life. Everywhere you look, plants are growing, climbing, and blooming. With its tropical forests, exotic flora, and breathtaking views, the island is a true paradise for nature lovers. The vibrant Creole gardens are well worth a visit during your stay on the Island of Flowers. Respectful of both people and the environment, a Creole garden is, above all, a space designed according to a few basic principles. During your visit, you’ll learn more about techniques for water conservation, recycling, soil preservation and fertility, as well as maintaining biodiversity.
Since it’s a subsistence garden, a Creole garden is full of fruit and edible plants, a few medicinal species, and, of course, ornamental plants. It should be noted, however, that this type of space is laid out according to a very specific structure. The “case” garden is organized around the dwelling. The “representation” garden, on the other hand, is located at the front and is particularly flower-filled, symbolizing the protection of the house.

The Bird of Paradise, a tropical flower in Martinique

You can’t talk about gardens in Martinique without starting with this one. Located on Route de la Trace, just a few minutes from Fort-de-France, the Balata Garden is often the first place that captures visitors’ hearts… and honestly, it lives up to its reputation. As soon as you enter, you’re immersed in a lush, colorful, almost surreal tropical world. Over 3,000 plant species, flowers everywhere, majestic palm trees… and above all, that feeling of being somewhere else. But the real highlight is the suspended walkways. Walking above the canopy, with views of the mountains and the sea in the distance… it’s the kind of experience you’ll never forget.
Hours: Open 7 days a week from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The Balata Garden is open on public holidays.
Prices: Adult ticket €16, child ticket (ages 3–12) €11
Tips: Come early in the morning to avoid the crowds and enjoy the light. Combine your visit with a walk along the Route de la Trace.

Martinique is more than just beaches and sunshine. The island is home to several thousand plant species, many of which are tropical: palm trees, balisiers, hibiscus, orchids, ferns, bamboo… Some are endemic, while others were introduced over time and have adapted perfectly to the climate.
But Martinique’s natural beauty isn’t limited to its flora. When it comes to wildlife, the gardens and natural areas also serve as refuges for many species:
Hummingbirds (or “flycatchers”): true little jewels in motion, they are easily spotted around flowers
Sugarbirds and tropical birds: very common in gardens, attracted by nectar
Iguanas: especially in quiet, sunny areas
Mongooses: discreet but very much present; you can sometimes spot them crossing a trail
Lizards: ubiquitous, they scurry everywhere—on rocks, trees, or paths
Tropical butterflies: numerous, colorful, and ubiquitous

On average, allow between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on the garden and your pace. Some places, such as Balata or Habitation Clément, can easily take up half a day if you take the time to enjoy them.
Mornings are still the best time to visit: it’s cooler, the light is softer, and there are fewer people around. After a light shower, the gardens are even more beautiful, with more vibrant colors and lush greenery.

To explore the island easily, renting a car is still the best option. Europcar Martinique offers a wide selection of recent vehicles (economics cars, SUVs, utility vehicles) with agencies located at Aimé Césaire Airport and in strategic areas.
