Hiking in Martinique

In Martinique, there are routes for everyone. You can choose between wide shaded forest paths or winding tracks through tropical vegetation.

Practical advice for a hike

In Martinique, hiking is a must to discover the breathtaking landscapes of the region. Through 180 km of marked trails, you will have the opportunity to combine sport and pleasure, in the heart of a magnificent nature.

There is something for everyone: there are a multitude of routes, from the easiest to the most challenging. For a family outing, choose the Gorges de la Falaise, in the north of the island, for example. The path goes along a river in the heart of the tropical forest. The Pointe Rouge trail, on the Presqu'île de la Caravelle side, also provides a total change of scenery. This 3 km long trail is easy and leads to the paradisiacal beach of Pointe Rouge.

The most experienced hikers also have the possibility to surpass themselves in Martinique. The Morne Larcher is a very famous hike, which promises a magical panorama at the top. The 3 km route is strewn with steep slopes and volcanic rocks. For those who are keen on sensations, the Pitons du Carbet will be perfect. These sites (5 summits in total), culminate at 1 197 meters high and invite to be careful (important vegetation and lack of marking).

Hiking in Martinique: Europcar's advice

Beginners and experienced hikers must be careful when hiking. Here are the tips to follow, to optimize your stay and your outdoor activities.

First of all, go with enough water in case of dehydration. Indeed, the temperatures are sometimes very high. You should also bring good shoes, especially on the most complex trails, where accidents are likely. Covering up is also a must: bring a hat or sun cream to avoid sunburn. To make the most of every moment, it is important to calculate the length of your itinerary, so as not to be surprised by the night.

Don't forget to be extra vigilant: don't go alone! Also, plan a means of transportation, by booking your car rental in Martinique, because public transportation is scarce on the island.
