All about sugar cane through the Maison de la Canne

The House of Cane, a regional museum

Created in 1987 by the Martinique association of the House of Cane, the House of Cane is located in the old distillery of Vatable which operated until 1962.

The Sugar Cane House

It traces the history of sugar cane, a trade that dominated the Martinican economy until the middle of the 20th century. The Maison de la Canne focuses on the slave system that is intimately linked to it.

The visit takes you back four centuries, from the arrival of the slave ships in the middle of the 17th century to the appearance of steam engines or mills.

The visit of the House of the Cane is done on two floors through temporary or permanent exhibitions like "A land, a plant, a people". You will discover many documents, models and engravings of the period retracing the history of the colonial and slave industry of sugar. The second floor is dedicated to the manufacture of rum.

From the plantation of the cane to the manufacture of rum, through the extraction of sugar, all the steps are described to you through the visit.
