Martinique is a beautiful Caribbean island, offering picturesque landscapes and winding roads that invite adventure.
When exploring this island paradise in a rental car, it's essential to know the local driving rules, including the presence of speed cameras.
Find out how many speed cameras are active in Martinique, where they are located and what to do if you get flashed with your rental car.
In Martinique, there are generally two types of speed camera : turret speed cameras and fixed speed cameras. But what are the differences ?
In some contexts, "radar tourelle" is used to designate the newer, more advanced fixed radars, while "radar fixe" refers to the older, less sophisticated models. However, the main difference lies in the technical characteristics and physical visibility of turret radars compared with traditional fixed radars.
Speed cameras in Martinique are generally placed in high-risk areas where road safety is a major concern. You can find them in urban areas, near schools, hospitals, residential areas and speed-limited roads.
Some speed cameras are also installed on motorway sections to monitor speeding.

When you rent a car and break the rules of the road, you assume full responsibility. It is your civic duty to reimburse the rental car agency in full.
The main driver registered on the rental contract will therefore receive the fine. It doesn't matter if an additional driver was registered on the rental contract. The main driver, i.e. the hirer of the vehicle, assumes financial responsibility by signing the rental contract.
