Consisting of a wide strip of white sandy shallows, Josephine Bathtub is surrounded by a superb coral reef. The water is clear, limpid and especially shallow, it does not exceed the size! So you can literally walk in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in a most idyllic setting.
The origin of the name Josephine bathtub is not certain and two explanations stand out.
Some say that it takes its name from Empress Josephine de Beauharnais, a native of the island and wife of Napoleon I, who enjoyed bathing there. A doubt remains however, residing in Trois-Ilets she had to travel more than 20km to bathe. When you love, you don't count...
Some people think that the origin of the name of the shoal is linked to a dredger (dredging boat), the Josephine, which used to come to the place to get sand.
To reach the Josephine Bathtub from François, several options are available: the boat, the kayak or the catamaran are the most common. You can go there by your own means or go through excursionists.
To go to Le François in Martinique, a rental car is highly recommended.
Of course, the first thing to do in the Josephine bathtub is to bathe, but once there, other pleasures are offered to you :
Among the local folklore, spend your baptism of rum, it meets a certain success with visitors. It's about drinking a sip of rum with an upside down head,
Take the opportunity to discover the islets bordering the bathtub where you can enjoy a wild nature and transparent waters suitable for snorkeling,
Take the time to have lunch on one of the islets.
