Have you heard of the Cap Martinique? It’s a transatlantic race open to fast sailboats between 30 and 40 feet (about 10 to 12 meters) in length. Here’s everything you need to know about this iconic adventure.

The third edition of the Cap Martinique will set sail on April 19, 2026, from La Trinité-sur-Mer, a port in Brittany that is synonymous with ocean racing.
The course is intentionally straightforward in concept but demanding to navigate. After the start, the skippers set sail for the Atlantic via a strategic passage: they must leave the island of Porto Santo, in the Madeira archipelago, to starboard before continuing on to the Caribbean and finishing in Fort-de-France, Martinique.
This choice of route is no accident. It avoids overly northerly routes, which are often associated with harsher weather conditions, and offers a course that is technical, challenging, and safe.
Final destination: Fort-de-France in Martinique. The finish line is at the Étang Z’abricots marina, after several weeks at sea without stopping.

The boats usually arrive near La Française Beach in Fort-de-France, and you can spot them from Le Marin two iconic spots where the atmosphere is both lively and welcoming. The docks and the waterfront become prime viewing spots, where locals and visitors gather to wait for the boats.
No special arrangements or tickets are needed. All you have to do is be there, gaze at the horizon, and let yourself be swept up in the atmosphere. And it is often in this simplicity that the experience becomes memorable.
To watch an ocean liner arrive
To see the ships up close
To meet passionate sailors
To enjoy the atmosphere and the arrival village in Fort-de-France

La Cap Martinique follows in the tradition of major transatlantic sailing races, but with a more human and accessible approach than the historic classics. Launched in the early 2020s, the race quickly established itself on the sailing calendar by offering a challenging format that is nonetheless open to a wide range of sailors.
The idea is simple yet powerful: to sail solo, non-stop, from mainland France to Martinique across the Atlantic. A legendary route, already traversed by many iconic races, but reimagined here with a more modern spirit and a closer connection to the participants.
What makes the Cap Martinique unique is precisely this balance between performance and accessibility. It attracts experienced skippers, but also passionate sailors who come to experience a personal adventure as much as a competition.
The Cap Martinique is a solo transatlantic sailing race that connects mainland France to Martinique without stopping, and is part of the great tradition of modern Atlantic crossings.
The Cap Martinique is designed for sailors who already have solid experience at sea and in offshore sailing. Although the race is open to amateurs, it imposes strict qualification and safety requirements for both boats and skippers.
The chosen time of year, in April, is generally considered more favorable for a crossing to the Caribbean. Weather conditions are often more stable, even though the ocean always retains an element of unpredictability.
La Cap Martinique is not an annual event. La Cap Martinique is held on a regular basis, with editions spaced out over time (roughly every two years). This schedule allows skippers to prepare thoroughly for the race, both technically and financially, while maintaining a high level of anticipation surrounding the event.
Each edition brings its own share of new stories, new participants, and new routes across the Atlantic.
The race starts in mainland France and finishes in Martinique, where the boats cross the finish line gradually depending on wind and sea conditions, spreading the event out over several days.
During the race, participants can track the event using an online mapping system that displays the boats’ positions and updates the standings in real time.

The Cap Martinique is open to experienced amateur sailors, sailing solo or in pairs. Sailors in the Cap Martinique commit to crossing the Atlantic without advanced weather routing, without extensive satellite assistance, and with limited resources. Specifically:
Traditional navigation
A strategy based on observation
Constant adaptation to conditions
The race brings the often-overlooked fundamentals back into focus: anticipation, reading the winds, managing fatigue, and staying alert. Here, performance doesn’t depend solely on the boat. It depends first and foremost on the sailor.
