Discovering the medicinal plants of Martinique

Martinique has one of the richest flora of the Lesser Antilles. In addition to the plants that give exquisite fruits, some other plants of the island are reputed to have medicinal virtues and are therefore often used to treat various ailments.

Medicinal plants

Still highly valued and used in Martinique today, locals call these traditional herbal remedies "rimèd razié" (or home remedies).

In 2012, 12 medicinal plants from Martinique were added to the "Liste A" (traditionally used medicinal plants) of the Plantes Médicinales in the French pharmacopoeia. Among the 12 plants, we find :

  • Fleurit-Noël

  • Zeb mouch atoumo

  • Fragile ester, milk herb

  • Woman's herb, zeb a fanm

  • Devil's tobacco, Healing-all

  • Lanmwaz, Ti ponpon

  • Herb needle Zèb Zédjui

  • Pompon-soldat, Big pompon

  • Sheep ear, Zorèy-sheep

The markets in Martinique

If you wish to discover these "rimèd razié", go through Martinique in search of the typical markets of the archipelago. You will mainly find these medicinal plants on the markets, near the women selling fresh vegetables and fruits. These plants can be used in infusion, decoction or maceration.

Find yourself in the heart of a traditional and colorful atmosphere by visiting the markets of the archipelago. The biggest one being the one in Fort-de-France, you will also find many other small markets in the communes of Martinique such as the covered market of Sainte-Anne very coveted by the tourists.
